Folk Arts in Season: Folk Flower Crowns

folk arts in season May 27, 2024

In many places around the world, since Ancient times, flower crowns have been worn to celebrate the season and promote good fortune. Flower crowns have honoured the Gods, paid tribute to warriors, inspired bards, honoured mother earth, acknowledged cultural lineage and traditional attire, gave blessings to weddings and significant life events, symbolized peace and promoted love for all beings.

The crafting of a folk flower crown has much more to do with working intuitively and organically with what’s on hand than a series of formal steps. Although wire and flower tape can create a base, it’s more satisfying to allow available plant material to form the whole creation.

Simple  steps ...

Forage base materials.

Willow or cedar boughs, vines or long grasses can all work as a crown foundation. Simply create a circlet, weaving and/or wrapping/overlapping materials until you have a good base for your crown. Make sure it will fit you.

Forage flowers.

Flowers of all sizes and colours are wonderful. Weave their stems into the base circlet and tie them off with long grasses if necessary. Some flowers have stems that can serve as the circlet itself if woven well.

Notes:

When foraging, be sure to stay away from plants that will cause allergic reactions!

Happy foraging!!!
