Folk Arts in Season: Mini Besom

folk arts in season Oct 30, 2024

A mini besom is a small broom traditionally used in various spiritual practices, particularly in earth-based, magical traditions. Typically made from natural materials like twigs or straw bound together with string, it symbolizes the act of clearing away negative energies or unwanted influences. Mini besoms are often used at this time of year, as a way to honour the release fall brings and cleansing what doesn’t serve. Used literally to sweep or as decorative item, a mini besom represents an intention to create a sacred space.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to making a mini besom:

Materials Needed:

  • Small twigs, straw, or dried herbs (like lavender or rosemary)
  • Twine or string
  • Scissors
  • A small stick or dowel (for the handle)

Instructions:

  1. Gather Materials: Collect twigs or straw. Aim for a handful that’s about 6-12 inches long. You can also include herbs for added symbolism and fragrance.
  2. Prepare the Handle: Take your small stick or dowel, which will serve as the handle of the besom. It should be sturdy but not too thick.
  3. Bundle the Bristles: Gather the twigs or straw into a tight bundle, aligning them at one end. The bundled end will form the bristles of the besom.
  4. Attach the Bristles: Position the bristles against one end of the handle.
  5. Secure with Twine: Using the twine or string, tightly wrap the base of the bristles around the handle. Start about an inch or two up from the end of the handle, and wrap several times to secure it.
  6. Tie Off: Once secured, tie a knot to hold the bristles in place. You can create a decorative bow if desired.
  7. Trim the Bristles: If needed, trim the bristles to your preferred length, ensuring they are even.
  8. Bless or Charge: If you follow spiritual practices, take a moment to bless or charge your mini besom with your intentions.
