Folk Arts in Season: Wind Chimes

crafting in season Mar 16, 2025

March crafts are often inspired by the themes of spring renewal, fertility, luck and nature’s awakening. Crafting a wind chime calls forth the rain and breeze that comes with spring. Using found objects is a wonderful way to recycle everyday items into a unique, functional, and artistic creation. These types of wind chimes not only make beautiful sounds but also reflect your creativity and connection to the world around you. You can use a wide variety of materials such as metal, glass, wood, shells, or even small trinkets you find around your home or outdoors.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to creating a wind chime from found objects:

Materials You’ll Need:

  • Found objects (metal washers, old keys, spoons, shells, bottle caps, beads, small pieces of driftwood, buttons, small bells, etc.)
  • String, fishing line, or twine (strong enough to hold the weight of the objects)
  • A wooden dowel or branch for the base (or a sturdy, flat object to hang the chimes from)
  • Drill (or a needle and thread for creating holes if no drill is available)
  • Scissors or wire cutters
  • Hot glue gun (optional, for securing items)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Select and Gather Your Found Objects.

  • Begin by collecting various items that will create pleasing sounds when they move in the wind. Metals (like keys, washers, or spoons) produce a nice ringing sound, while glass (bottle bottoms or beads) can create a gentle chime. Organic materials like seashells, wooden pieces, and stones can add texture and variety to the sound.
  • Try to pick items of different sizes and weights, as this will create a diverse and melodic sound when they collide or sway in the wind.

2. Prepare Your Base.

  • Find a sturdy, horizontal object to use as your base. This can be a branch, a wooden dowel, a metal rod, or even a piece of driftwood you’ve found. This will hold all of your chimes and act as the anchor for hanging them.
  • If using wood, you may want to sand it down for smoothness and a more polished appearance.

3. Create Holes in Your Objects.

  • Most found objects will need holes drilled in them to attach the string or twine. If you have a drill, use a small bit to make holes through items like metal keys, wooden pieces, or shells.
  • For objects that are too small or delicate to drill (like glass or thin shells), you can create a hole with a hot needle or use a needle and thread to string them through.
  • If an object is too solid to drill, consider gluing it to another item or using strong wire to create a hanging loop.

4. Cut and Attach String to Each Object.

  • Cut pieces of string, twine, or fishing line to different lengths, depending on the desired look and sound. Shorter strings will make the chimes hang higher and closer together, while longer strings will allow them to dangle lower.
  • Tie each object onto the string, making sure the knots are tight and secure so they won’t come undone when the wind blows. If necessary, use hot glue to secure the knots or the objects themselves.

5. Attach the Chimes to the Base.

  • Once all of your objects are attached to the strings, you can begin tying them to the base. Space the chimes out evenly (or unevenly for a more natural look) along the base, leaving some room between each one so that they can move freely and create sound.
  • Use knots or small metal rings (if you have them) to secure each string to the base. Be sure the knots are tight and that the chimes will hang freely without getting tangled.

6. Add a Hanging Loop.

  • Once all your chimes are attached to the base, tie a strong hanging loop at the top of your base (branch or dowel). This will allow you to hang the wind chime from a hook or tree branch.
  • You can use more twine or wire to make the loop, ensuring it’s sturdy enough to hold the weight of your chimes.

7. Test Your Wind Chime.

  • Before finalizing the wind chime, give it a test! Gently tap the objects to hear the sound they produce. Adjust the length of the strings or reposition objects if needed to achieve the sound you like.
  • If some pieces are too heavy or produce a dull sound, consider replacing them with lighter items or adding more delicate materials.

8. Hang and Enjoy.

  • Once you’re satisfied with the arrangement and sound, hang your wind chime in an area where it will catch the breeze, such as a porch, garden, or near a window.
  • Enjoy the natural, melodic sound that your wind chime creates as it moves in the wind. You’ve not only crafted a unique decoration, but also created something that connects you to the cycles of nature.

Tips for Personalization:

Color and Texture: You can add paint or decorations to your objects to give them a more personal or artistic touch. For example, you can paint stones, beads, or metal objects with vibrant colours.

Themes: Consider creating a wind chime based on a theme, such as a beach theme with seashells and driftwood or a rustic theme using old cutlery and metal washers.

Different Sounds: Experiment with different materials for varied sounds. For example, glass creates a sweet, tinkling sound, while metal produces a more resonant, ringing chime. Combining different materials creates a fuller sound.

Crafting a wind chime from found objects is not only a creative and sustainable way to make art, but it also brings beauty and soothing sounds to your outdoor spaces. The wind chime serves as a reminder of nature's rhythms and the beauty of transformation, as everyday items are given new life in a playful and harmonious form.
