My Grandmother's Recipe: Sally’s Custard Apple Pie Crumble
Sep 22, 2024I see very few apple pies made like this anymore. It’s a shame because this is my favourite way by far. This comes compliments of grannie Sally.
1 - 10 inch deep dish apple pie shell (unbaked)
8 apples
2 Tbsp packed brown sugar
1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
Custard:
1 cup milk
1 cup whip cream
1/4 cup flour
3 egg yolks
1/3 cup sugar
2 tsp vanilla
2 tsp grated lemon peel
Crumble:
1/2 cup brown sugar packed
3/4 cup flour
1 tsp cinnamon
Pinch nutmeg
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup Parmesan
1/2 cup quick cook oats
- Preheat oven to 425 F
- Bake crust 8 minutes
- Change heat to 350 F
- Peel and cut apples, toss with brown sugar and cinnamon
- Make custard, beating all ingredients together
- In another bowl combine all crumble ingredients, using your fingers to combine moisture together
- Spread apples into pie shell, press down lightly
- Pour custard mixture over top; then sprinkle crumble mixture over top that
- Bake at 350 F for 45-50 minutes
